Birdville High School Senior Named National Merit Finalist
  • Academics

Birdville ISD is proud to announce that Birdville High School senior Emma Pitner has been named a National Merit Scholarship Program Finalist, one of the most prestigious academic honors a high school student can earn in the United States.

The National Merit Scholarship Program begins with more than 1.3 million high school juniors nationwide who take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). From that group, about 16,000 students are named semifinalists, representing less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors. After completing a rigorous application process that includes submitting academic records, leadership and activity involvement, an essay, and confirming SAT or ACT scores, only about 15,000 students advance to become National Merit Finalists.

As a finalist, Emma is now eligible to compete for approximately 7,500 National Merit Scholarships, totaling nearly $30 million. In addition to potential scholarship awards, National Merit Finalists often receive significant college scholarship packages, honors program invitations, and recruitment opportunities from universities across the country, recognizing their exceptional academic achievement and leadership potential.

Following graduation, Emma plans to attend Harding University, where she intends to major in biomedical engineering and pursue a career in prosthetics.

“I have always tried really hard in academics, and financially, I have always wanted to help my parents in paying for my college education,” Emma said when she was named a Semifinalist earlier this school year. “I want to try and pay them back for everything they have done for me, and that is part of why I am so overjoyed to receive this. This is an external validation of everything I have been working towards.”

The National Merit Scholarship Program, established in 1955, is widely recognized as one of the nation’s most respected academic competitions. The program identifies and honors students who demonstrate exceptional academic ability and the potential to succeed in rigorous college studies.

“The Birdville High School community is proud to recognize Emma for being named a National Merit Finalist,” said Tim Drysdale, Birdville High School principal. “This prestigious recognition places her among a very small group of students nationwide who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement. Emma’s dedication, character, and commitment to excellence make her a great example of what it means to be a Hawk. We are incredibly proud of her accomplishment and look forward to all she will achieve in the future.”
