Birdville High Senior Receives Full Scholarship to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

Angel Ruiz Rodriguez’s eyes flashed when he saw the email he had been waiting for finally come through – but he wasn’t ready to open it yet. He wanted his family to be there when he did.

Later that evening, with his family surrounding him, the Birdville High School senior finally opened the email and saw the animated confetti fall on the screen with one simple word. Congratulations!

Angel soon learned he had not only been accepted into one of the most competitive and renowned universities in the country – he had also received a full scholarship. Angel was the recipient of the prestigious QuestBridge Match Scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which will provide him with a full four-year scholarship valued at more than $320,000. MIT is among the most selective QuestBridge partner universities, known globally for its rigorous academics, cutting-edge research and innovation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics

“This means everything to me,” Angel said. “When I got it, I was screaming for joy. I wanted to give back to my parents and make sure they didn’t have to pay anything for my college education.”

Angel was one of only 2,550 finalists from across the United States recognized with this tremendous achievement.

The Match Scholarship provides high-achieving students full four-year scholarships to some of the nation’s top colleges and universities. Students who receive these scholarships demonstrate they are prepared to excel in college and beyond. The Match Scholarship removes financial barriers and allows students to focus fully on their academic and career goals. .

Angel’s QuestBridge Match Scholarship to MIT is an extraordinary accomplishment, and we are incredibly proud of him,” said Tim Drysdale, Birdville High School principal. “His hard work, character, and determination reflect the very best of Birdville High School. This is a life-changing opportunity, and we can’t wait to see all he will achieve.”

Angel said that he is currently deciding between pursuing a career in either astrophysics or aerospace engineering. He added the program structure at MIT will allow him to explore his interests and that his ultimate dream job is to work at a space agency like NASA.

“I love the mystery of space,” Angel said. “There is so much left to explore. I would love to be able to contribute to our knowledge of space.”
